I started waking up at dawn last spring and got to see many wonderful sunrises in Portland, and then on Swans Island where I now live for half the year. The dark spruce made such a striking “Skyline” against the colorful sky that the image stuck with me. I made one acrylic painting to remind me of the scene, and then over the winter, back in my Portland studio, I made a series of paintings.
In several of the smaller works I added the new tree element over abstract paintings I had made several years ago. Although I have always made abstract work alongside my semi-abstract landscape works, I find I feel a greater emotional attachment to work that has a reference to landscape.
