James Mattison (b. 1990) is a self-taught fine artist whose work explores contemporary impressions of people and place, drawing inspiration from both his New England roots and travels beyond. Born in Portland, Maine, he began painting at an early age, later earning a degree in Digital Arts and Marketing from Stetson University in 2018 and starting his career as a graphic designer in Florida before relocating to Portland, Oregon to work with a long-term client. In 2020, he returned to Maine and began working full-time as a fine artist with the George Anderson Gallery, where he also took on a co-management role at its 340 Fore Street location in Portland. Since then, Mattison has focused fully on his painting practice, creating emotionally resonant works that emphasize atmosphere through strong lines and vibrant color.
