For this exhibition at Portland Art Gallery, Bibby Gignilliat continues her exploration of layered storytelling through collage, paint, and found materials. Drawing inspiration from fragments gathered in everyday life—torn posters, packaging, typography, and street remnants—she builds compositions that balance spontaneity with thoughtful structure.
Working intuitively, Gignilliat allows the materials to guide the process. Bold gestural lines move across fields of layered collage, creating a sense of rhythm, play, and discovery. Hidden text, unexpected color, and weathered textures reveal themselves gradually, inviting the viewer to look closer.
Throughout the work there is a spirit of curiosity and experimentation. Fragments from the past are transformed into something new, reminding us that meaning often emerges from the layering of experience, chance, and imagination.
