Margot Hartford Answers "4 Questions"
1. Your stories/memories are personal. What do you think about viewers
bringing their own interpretation to your paintings?
I grew up in Canada, where summer camp was a
precious annual tradition. I have vivid memories of spending days on the dock,
swimming, canoeing, and sailing. These experiences often find their way into my
artwork, reflected in the recurring themes of water, expansive blue skies, and bold
white clouds.
Ferris wheels, roller coasters and other mechanical rides have become part of my
work. Attending an amusement park often evokes fond memories because it
captures the essence of simpler, joyful times. The sights, sounds, and smells of a
fair—such as the vibrant booths, lively music, and the aroma of fresh-baked treats
—can transport you back in time.
2. How do you overcome creative blocks?
I’m fortunate to rarely experience creative blocks. My mind is
constantly brimming with ideas, and I often find myself juggling more concepts
and inspirations that I have time to bring to life. This abundance of creativity is
both exhilarating and challenging, as I must prioritize which ideas to explore and
develop.
3. What is your biggest inspiration?
Hmmm. I don’t have the perfect answer for this question today.
4. How does your art affect other aspects of your life?
Art becomes a lens through which I view and
interpret the world. Creativity and artistic expression drive me to seek beauty,
meaning, and connection in everyday experiences. I live in a house surrounded by
the artwork I love, all acquired from my artist friends and from creative family
members.
