Liz Prescott Answers "4 Questions"
1. Your stories/memories are personal. What do you think about viewers
bringing their own interpretation to your paintings?
I am wide open to viewers applying their own stories and interpretations to my
work. How can we not? We see through the lens of our own experiences.
It's wonderful when someone shares with me a completely different take on my
work that I might have intended. Honestly, I work so intuitively, more on feeling
and sensing than, "Oh here is the boat, here is the wave." Once I create it, it is
then open to anyone's interpretation.
2. How do you overcome creative blocks?
I think we all have times when we just aren't feeling motivated, no spark of
inspiration. My answer is simply to still show up. Find time to go to the studio
every day, even if for only a short while. Just to look if I can't paint due to blocks
or a brain that is too busy with other obligations and distractions. Putting the
phone on Do Not Disturb is a big part of this!
3. What is your biggest inspiration?
I'm always searching for a sense of light and feeling of place. But I often go off
playing with pattern, shape, brushstrokes, strong contrast. The formal elements of
painting can be just as exciting.
4. How does your art affect other aspects of your life?
There's no question my art centers and grounds me. I can get into a zone and
forget whatever I may be struggling with at the time. This is incredibly healing and
something I will turn to for balance my whole life.
