Emma Ballou Answers "4 Questions"
1. Your stories/memories are personal. What do you think about viewers
bringing their own interpretation to your paintings?
I love when people bring their own interpretations to my paintings, mainly because to me it signifies that they have connected with it in some meaningful way. This is one of the reasons why abstracted landscapes captivate me so much and can make them such powerful subjects to paint. Everyone shares a connection to nature in some form, and abstracted landscapes provide a pathway for the viewer to connect with a feeling or memory of a place that exists within them, rather than a specific physical location out in the world. When such a connection is forged, wonderful things can happen for both the painting and the viewer.
2. How do you overcome creative blocks?
I find there are varying degrees of creative block. When I'm just feeling a bit stuck with a painting, I've learned that taking a short break and spending time outdoors works wonders. The fresh air and reconnecting with nature always provides a surge of well-being and inspiration for me. However, when I'm experiencing a more significant feeling of creative burnout, I've found that stepping away from painting for a few days to a week to explore my other interests and hobbies gives my creative practice the space it needs to breathe and recharge. It's counterintuitive, but I firmly believe that taking short, periodic breaks from painting enhances my productivity as an artist. Moreover, when I'm in the studio working through a creative block, I enjoy experimenting with new tools, mediums, and techniques to keep things engaging and fresh. Following your curiosity, no matter where it leads, is always a good idea.
3. What is your biggest inspiration?
Of course, it's nature! I can't get enough of it. I cherish its ever-changing moods and seasons, and I'm deeply grateful for the endless stories and inspiration it offers for my creative practice.
4. How does your art affect other aspects of your life?
I don’t see my art as separate from my life; rather, it's an essential part of who I am. Creating is crucial to my overall happiness and well-being, fueling everything else I do in my everyday life.
