William Crosby Answers "4 Questions"

1. Your stories/memories are personal. What do you think about viewers
bringing their own interpretation to your paintings?

The viewer is not only welcomed to freely interpret my paintings but really expected and wanted to interpret them: Using their frame of reference and imagination. This is especially true since most of my work is abstract or towards abstraction of the natural landscape and requires looking and thinking.

2. How do you overcome creative blocks?

My method of working is somewhat undisciplined: Not a scheduled daily routine. I work in spurts in both my New York and Maine studios. By backing off and staying away from the painting I give myself a fresh perspective on ongoing work I don't even consider creative blocks Also I keep several paintings going at once and often of the same composition so as not to get bogged down with details or find that I have overworked a painting. It is important to know when to stop!

3. What is your biggest inspiration?

I am constantly inspired by the natural landscape of land water and sky in all seasons. I am always "looking" and seeing design and relationships and asymetrical balance in the natural landscape and then in my paintings and photographic compositions.

4. How does your art affect other aspects of your life?

Art, in my paintings and photography, is a major force and motivation in my life along with wife and family. Design relationships in all things is important to me. I am always painting and photography in my mind if not actually doing it. Art, especially painting as well as taking pictures, is an escape of sorts: A world in my head and on canvas and through the lens.
